Today we introduce you to Miss Valerie! Valerie is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
Tell us about your family.
My family is from Texas, and moved to Trussville, Alabama in 1999. We have three dogs. Nelson, Norris, and my personal dog Cashew. We enjoy doing every holiday and birthday together as a family. My sister is 29 years old and is working towards her PhD in Epidemiology. Since we are both moved out, we have family dinner nights at my parents’ house every Sunday night. My family are all Alabama fans; however I chose the better half of the rivalry, Auburn of course.
Do you have any hobbies or interests?
My hobbies include dancing in my room, playing with my dog cashew, going for walks, shopping, making crepes, and interior design.
Favorite Birmingham restaurant?
My favorite restaurant in Birmingham is Hot & Hot.
Where did/do you go to school?
For my undergraduate degree, I attended Auburn University and I obtained my Bachelors in Science where I studied Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Child Life and Preschool & Infancy. I was recently accepted into Graduate School at Florida Institute of Technology where I will obtain my Masters in ABA.
What made you want to be an BCBA/BCaBA/RBT?
I sort of stumbled into Behavior Analysis, and after working with the children as an RBT, I realized it was my calling to pursue a career in ABA and apply to graduate school.
What’s your favorite aspect of being a BCBA/BCaBA/RBT?
The opportunity to make a difference in the children I serve and their families lives.
What are your favorite resources for learning more about behavior analysis and/or Autism?
My coworkers, the Cooper Book, and ABA Instagram accounts.
What’s the one thing you wish parents knew about behavior analysis?
Collaborating with the therapists will improve service outcomes.
